INSIDE THE BRILLIANT, WITTY, HILARIOUS MIND OF FRED ALLEN!!"Treadmill To Oblivion" is the definitive book of Fred Allen's wit, humor, and charm. It traces his adventures in radio from 1932 to 1949. Within, we get samples of rountines, brilliantly funny jabs (Bewtween he and Jack Benny) and insight into the comic, concentrated mind of Fred Allen; one of America's greatests comedians. Also, there are sevral humorous observations, asides, and quips that reveal Allen's biting ever-throbbing wit. A MUST-READ for any lover of wit, wisdom, and humor. A good companion to this book is the honestly warm "Much Ado About Me", Fred Allen's subsequent book, telling the tale of his life before radio. Regardless, READ THIS BOOK!!!!!

Tree of Cranes
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books (October, 1991)
Average review score:

Read it quietlyThis autobiographical story of author Allen Say's discovery of Christmas is gentle and beautiful. A little boy in Japan (Say) wasn't supposed to play near the neighbor's carp pond, but he did, and fell in! Mother was a little mad at him, but she was preoccupied with making origami cranes. She put them on a tree that she brought in from the garden, and explained to her puzzled son that this was a Christmas tree. (She had lived in California as a girl.) The boy asked for and received a Samurai kite as a gift. He never forgot that day, because it was the first time he ever heard about Christmas.
This lovely story introduces children to a traditional Japanese family and to a child who experiences two cultures. The illustrations are quite unique and are almost shiny. The simple text is easy to read and children from 6-8 love this book.
Wonderful Illustrations, Good & Meaningful StoryI loved this book enough to, in pre-Amazon days, put in two special orders (both failed) through Crown Books and finally, after two years, find a children's specialty book store that could get it for me. It is the story of a small boy learning to obey his mother as well as the story of his first Christmas. The book's strength is its astonishing illustrations. The luminous pictures of the family's Japanese home, the small pine tree with the silver origami cranes and candles, and the emotion on the face of the little boy captivate my son, who is not yet two and a half. Even at his age, which is much younger than this book is intended for, he really responds to the poetic text, the relationship between the boy and his mother, his struggle to obey his mother and deal with her disapproval of his misbehavior, and the beauty of the tree of cranes. This is a peaceful and gentle text, and I am grateful that I can finally read my son this story that both helps to build his character and exposes him to the beauty and grace of Japanese form.

Turtles (First Book)
Published in School & Library Binding by Franklin Watts, Incorporated (December, 1996)
Average review score:

FINALLY, A FANTASTIC AND ACCURATE BOOK FOR KIDS!This book was a joy to read, and is well worth the price. I've read hundreds of turtle books and, never have I seen such a well planned, informative, and pleasant book for children.
Chelonia are not easy animals to understand, however the author has done a fantastic job of making turtles and tortoises interesting animals, and, any child reading this book is certain to learn not only a wealth of information, but respect for these delicate (and often endangered) creatures. I highly recommend this book.
Finally a book about turtles for kids by people who love trtTurtles is a timely makeover of the turtles-are-for-kids" genre of American books.. It is meant as a generalized presentation of the diversity of turtles inhabiting the globe as its rightful denizens. The targeted readership appears to be older children, from about sixth-grade reading proficiency and up. But no open-minded adult would dismiss the book as boring or childish. This is a no-nonsense book full of accurate information, in which possibly unfamiliar words such as ectotherm are first presented in italics. This presentation facilitates reference to the glossary on pp. 56-57. Metric equivalents are provided parenthetically throughout, in thoughtful testimony to the stubbornness of the United States not to relinquish its adherence to antiquated standards of measure. The anatomy, physiology, and some specific adaptations of chelonians are introduced succinctly, as well as a clarification of the semantic confusion over the terms turtle, tortoise, terrapin in a table on p.19. Also presented in tabular format are common North American freshwater species, an overview of seven tortoise species and of all seven marine turtles, and thumbnail sketches of five particularly endangered turtle species. The book is divided into five short chapters, the last an eloquent plea for conservation. The final pages of the book consist of a glossary, names and addresses of turtle conservation

Two Steps Back: A Lifetime Forward
Published in Hardcover by Consignment Trust Company (15 December, 1999)

Two Steps Back, A Lifetime ForwardI met Bryan Fiese at one of his book lectures. Mr. Fiese is a vibrant, enthusiastic young man. He has developed a unique perspective on life and shares this perspective in his book, Two Steps Back, A Lifetime Forward. In his book, he paints a picture of life's journey as the "River of Life." He speaks of building your 'raft' to withstand the adventures of the river in order to reach the "Lake of Dreams." Mr. Fiese then states that the 'first step back' is to get in touch with your inner vision through meditation. The 'second step back' is to understand your behaviors by identifying the thoughts and the emotions that lead to your behaviors. 'A Lifetime Forward' begins with planting a commitment tree by writing down "what it is that you are committing yourself to become." He defines commitment as "a promise, a pledge to achieve an objective within a specific time period." Your idea becomes your 'seed.' Then you must "develop your roots" and "constantly feed and nourish your tree." Mr. Fiese provides ample tips for nourishing your commitment tree. He also gives great suggestions for quitting bad habits, living a healthier life, and building lasting relationships. The book concludes with a two page poem from an Indian Elder that will literally reach out and touch your soul. Bryan Fiese's book is a great source of inspiration. He encourages the reader to smile and live with enthusiasm. This author's words are like a breath of fresh air.
Recommended reading for anyone seeking self-improvement.In Two Steps Back, A Lifetime Forward, author Bryan Fiese provides a guide for acquiring positive insights to cope with the stresses and concerns of contemporary society. Through the use of humorous anecdote and story, Fiese showcases proven techniques and simple strategies that change thinking, make life more exciting, and our personal futures more optimistic. Readers will learn how to break bad habits, release negative emotions, understand feelings, control their own time, achieve success, develop enthusiasm, build lasting relationships and a great deal more. Two Steps Back, A Lifetime Forward is a much appreciated addition to the reading list for anyone seeking to improve their lives by improving themselves.

The Unseen
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica (12 December, 2001)
Average review score:

A Must Read for EveryoneTake Indiana Jones and The Mummy and mix them with Frank Peretti and you have a must read for the entire family! You have The Unseen! This book was intense from beginning to end. It reminds us that no matter how young our children seem, God has a special plan for them and is always guiding and protecting them (and us) when we rely on Him. It is a book with a terrific message without being preachy or boring. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, listening for the beat of angels' wings around you and the feel of the evil that wants to consume us when we step away from God's protection. Corey Allen did a wonderful job and I can't wait to join her for the next adventure!
absolute page turner"The Unseen" is a fantastic journey into the supernatural realm. Non-stop action from beginning to end. It's got it all, creepy, bone chilling, biting your nails, sitting on the edge of your seat, have to get to the next page, humorous loveable characters, and an absolutely unbelievable ending. Kids are the heroes of the day in this book, but really it's a "you have got to read this book" for any age. My kid's freaked out when they read this book, they have never read anything like it before. Wait did you hear that... was that the sound of angels' wings on the wind? --Definitely not your average, run of the mill, youth book.

Usborne Time Traveler
Published in Hardcover by E D C Publications (March, 1999)
Average review score:

What a great book! This book is recommended for ages 9-12, but my 6-year-old ate it up and my 4-year-old enjoyed it too. I bought it because my girls are going through a knights and castles thing, and this was recommended as a good place to learn about them. I thought we'd just read that section and put it on the shelf until the other subjects came up. Well my 6-year-old saw things differently. She loves this book. She loves the way it is laid out and what she is learning from it. She had no interest in Vikings or Romans or Egyptians before this, but now she wants more on all these topics. And it is a fun book for me to read too. It is reminding me of things I hadn't learned since I was a child, and the diagrams are so clear that maybe I am learning things better than I did when I was a child.
Four books in one, excellent information!WOW, this is a compilation of four different civilizations, it includes ALOT of information on understanding how these ancient groups lived. I have learned alot of interesting facts every time I haved looked through the pages. The illustration in it is amazing, there is not a corner left empty in this huge book!

Valley of the Shadow
Published in Hardcover by Presidio Pr (June, 1991)
Average review score:

VietnamThis is my second book by Mr. Leib. I find him to be a great author and holds not only the war,but America in context of the 60's. There is no doubt to any of us that lived through that era that the war, the country, and our people were surely at risk. America as we knew it had to change and luckily it did. Let us hope that history will not repeat that era. I will read all his books as his insight is great.
War IS hell.......through the eyes of a soldierWhen read with it predecessor, Liebs "The Fire Dream", this book provides the best of worst of the Vietnam War in a moving account of the life of a soldier as seen through the eyes of a man who wants to live and let live yet is forced to kill.
I have never read a more realistic account of what it was like to be there and am doubtful that I ever will.

Violin Making As It Was and Is
Published in Hardcover by Ward Lock Ltd (January, 1991)
Average review score:

Excellent book for the builderThis book covers everything from wood selection to finish. Includes full size plans for molds. The author also gives specifications of select Stradivarius violins. A must for any builders library!
Difficult to do justiceThis volume certainly qualifies as one of those rare gems which holds a special place in your bookcase or shop. Heron-Allen manages to give complete detail to all facets of preparation and construction, in addition to holding the reader's attention through numerous footnotes and sidelines. A detailed technical book written in a very enjoyable fashion, and with a style no longer seen. I've been known to read this book on several occasions for pure joy.
